Emphasis is placed on the significance of reported information and how both users and preparers can interpret and analyze accounting information. It features: Mini-Cases and Questions help students build valuable critical thinking skills by asking them to read, interpret, and analyze the financial statements of real not-for-profits and governmental entities. It also contains chapters covering state and local accounting principles include a "Continuing Problem" which asks students to review the comprehensive annual financial report (CAFR) of Austin, Texas and answer questions about it. The exercises include most of the CPA problems (suitably adapted) that have appeared on the CPA exam in the last decade.
This is the leading accounting principles textbook. It has been updated and improved to be an even better teaching and learning tool. Selected highlight features of the new edition include: Student and Instructor Approved Pedagogy; Unparalleled Readability; Useful, Thought-Provoking End-of-Chapter Material; E-Business insights describe how e-business technology has expanded the services provided by accountants; Interpreting Financial Statements: A Global Focus asks students to apply concepts presented in the chapter to specific situations faced by actual foreign companies.
This new Principles of Accounting text helps students navigate their future accounting and business careers with a practical set of accounting tools and the confidence they need to use those tools effectively in making business decisions. The authors have taken a more conceptual and decision-making approach to the material, which many instructors are now bringing into their Accounting courses based on the AECC "white paper" report and other recent market trends.
This brief and timely text describes the current environment and provides practical details on specific earnings management potential. It shows students how aggressive earnings management can be detected, based on publicly available information. Throughout the text, the authors use multiple perspectives to enhance understanding of the material. Short cases in every chapter provide a "feel" for evaluating public data and analyzing earnings management potential.
Corporate governance is concerned with how a company is directed and controlled and, in particular, with the role of the directorate and the need to ensure that there is an effective framework for accountability of directors to owners. This practical textbook, designed specifically for a one semester course/module provides a full discussion of corporate governance issues taking the broadest view of the corporate governance agenda.
Libby/Libby/Short wrote this text based on their belief that the subject of financial accounting is inherently interesting, but financial textbooks are often not. They believe most financial accounting textbooks fail to demonstrate that accounting is an exciting field of study and one that is important to future careers in business. This the only financial accounting text to successfully implement a real-world, single focus company approach in every chapter. Students and instructors have responded very favorably to the use of focus companies and the real world financial statements. The companies chosen are interesting and the decision-making focus shows the relevance of financial accounting regardless of whether or not the student has chosen to major in accounting.

It focuses within these areas on issues of topical and continuing interest. An introduction to these areas of current tax research is provided by the editors which sets the topics presented within the wider tax research domain.

Management Control Systems. Performance Measurement, Evaluation and Incentives by - K. Merchant and W.A. van der Stede.
From our review of this book - Merchant's framework, distinguishing different kinds of controls, is one of the milestones in our thinking about management controls. The addition of Wim van der Stede as a second author to this the latest edition of his main text on controls, did not lead to a dramatic change in the overall structure of the book, it just made the book even more international than it already was. This book is one of the few texts that give an in depth coverage of management control systems. The incorporation of many real-life cases enables the student to readily apply the theoretical concepts to practice. If this book were fiction, I would refer to it as a real page-turner.
Following the Money: The Enron Failure and the State of Corporate Disclosure by George Benston, Michael Bromwich, Robert E. Litan, Alfred Wagenhofer
Using the Enron case as a point of departure, the authors argue that the major problem lies not in the accounting and auditing standards themselves, but in the system of enforcing those standards. Rather than attempting to craft a single set of accounting and reporting standards for all companies throughout the world, the authors advise policymakers to allow competition between the two major sets of standards: US GAAP and IFRS. In particular, they recommend new forms of disclosure for a variety of non-financial indicators to better enable investors and analysts to ascertain the source and nature of intangible assets. They also urge policymakers to exploit the advantages of the Internet by encouraging more frequent financial disclosures in a form that will make them more widely accessible and more easily used.
This is a comprehensive, detailed, management accounting text based on the successful US text now in its 10th edition. In creating the European edition US terminology has been replaced to suit the market and some material reordering has been done. Where appropriate the book uses business examples from around the world rather than solely U.S. case material and discusses and compares the uses of and developments in management accounting in different countries. A big plus is the presentation of this book. It is a clear, well balanced book which students may find more user friendly than its main competitors.
Comments taken from our comprehensive review of this book by Amanda Nayak (University of Birmingham, UK) which you can see in full here
This brand new textbook is a development of the best selling, Financial Reporting by Alexander and Britton. It is designed to meet the rapidly emerging demand for coverage of the International Accounting Standards that will be compulsory for the EU and Australia by 2005. This is a both a European and global book with a wealth of worked examples and real world cases. The combination of an experienced author team and student orientated material make this text invaluable for the advanced financial accounting or financial reporting student at undergraduate or post graduate level.
Accounting for Managers: Interpreting Accounting Information for Decision-Making by Paul Collier
This text explains how accounting information is used by non-financial managers. The book emphasises the interpretation, rather than the construction, of accounting information and encourages a critical, rather than unthinking acceptance, of the underlying assumptions behind accounting. It links theory with practical examples and case studies drawn from real life business situations in service, retail and manufacturing industries.
This is an innovative new text for the non specialist student taking the first accounting course. It comprehensively covers the basic principles of Financial and Management accounting and Finance whilst firmly grounding these theories in the business world through real company case studies. Uniquely looking at SMEs and how they are set up and run means that the accounting and finance content is of utmost relevance to the business student. The wealth of worked examples and questions combined with a market leading website make this the only text the non specialist accountant will need.
The successful combination of an accessible, interactive style and a conceptual approach to the subject makes Financial Accounting the ideal core text for first year financial accounting students. The text adopts a questioning attitude to the subject of why accounting practices exist and how they work, without lingering on the technicalities. New to this Edition includes anin depth coverage of UK and International Accounting Standards a new chapter on preparation of the three primary statements, new examples and question material integrated throughout and a Companion website - including an instructor's manual, additional exercises and a bank of multiple choice questions for students.
Clear, yet comprehensive, this text offers a balanced approach to the complex and multidimensional subject of management control systems. It provides all the necessary technical coverage and summarises the relevant research literature. Most importantly perhaps it helps students develop their skills of applying the material to decision making situations. Key features of the book include: strong case selection including many HBS and USC cases, coverage of all the latest techniques including EVA and Balanced Scorecard and the combination of text, real-life examples and case material provides the students with a balanced picture of the key issues and the ability to apply the requisite skills in practice.
This text develops a framework for the comprehensive analysis of financial, equity market, and subjective measures of corporations. Giroux employs a user approach, with a focus on the external user, to emphasise a professional perspective of the financial analysis process. It assumes that students have a reasonable understanding of basic accounting and finance principles and attempts to expand from these to structure financial analysis for specific recommendations or decisions. Explore real-world problems and information by accessing Web sites discussed throughout the text and includes a companion Website that provides practice quizzes, as well as supplemental material and sample documents.
This title provides an excellent introduction to the theory & practice of cost and management accounting. It is rigorous & clear in its exposition, giving the student a wealth of professional examination questions to practice on. The new edition has been thoroughly updated to show the latest developments in the field and several chapters have been re-written. The winning combination of best selling author and tried and tested format makes this book essential for the first time Management Accountant.

Presents international accounting within the context of managing multinational enterprises. It focuses on how accounting applies to global strategies, and identifies the key accounting issues that influence multinational decision making. Accounting issues are analyzed from three viewpoints - theoretical, major national, treatments, and international harmonization efforts. Emphasis is on the broader international business environment and the context in which accounting is practiced worldwide.
This week's book of the week is sponsored by South-Western's Accounting Team. Visit http://accounting.swcollege.com to learn more about Ingram, Albright, and Hill's Managerial Accounting Information for Decisions, 3e (copyright 2003 South-Western).
Unlike any other text, Ingram presents managerial accounting as a crucial communication tool for management decision making. Additionally, students learn that service-oriented and product-oriented organizations apply similar approaches to gain accurate, timely information. Throughout the book, managerial accounting is viewed as a key component of multi-disciplinary management-with accountants working as part of a team to resolve questions of costing, pricing, and production.
In this book the emphasis is on studying AIS from a user’s perspective rather than from the perspective of a system developer or auditor. The author examines the link between strategy implementation and AIS design and the strategic role of information. The coverage differs from typical AIS texts by examining threats, exposures and controls at the organization level, based on organizational typology, rather than at the cycle level.
This book is now rightly well established in the market place. The latest edition has been updated to take account of recent pronouncements of the UK Accounting Standards Board and to improve its format. It covers the full range of practical bookkeeping and accounts preparation topics that would be expected of a first level financial accounting programme. The highlight of this book will be the excellent examples it provides.

This book helps readers understand the fundamental concepts of managerial accounting by creating an environment where readers can be actively engaged. It uses financial information and accounting practices of high-profile companies like Starbucks, Microsoft, Nike, and Intel.
Written by two highly respected academics from Europe and the US, Christensen and Demski's accounting theory textbook emphasizes accounting as an information system that uses the language and algebra of valuation to convey information about underlying economic decisions and events. This abstract notion of financial accounting, while being distinct from other accounting texts, is very appropriate for a theory text. In order to fully appreciate the effects of accounting rules, it is necessary to understand the economic fundamentals - and these are provided in this book in a comprehensive and highly instructive way.

Determining Value by Richard Barker - Published by Pearson Education
This book is concerned with the problems of valuing companies for both financial markets participants and advanced students of finance and accounting. The main body of the text begins by demonstrating the formal relationship between a company’s share price and the dividend discount model. Much of the rest of the book considers how consistent other valuation models, including some of the more recent shareholder value models, are with the DDM. In addition, the book takes significant time out from valuation models to consider the measurement of financial performance through the published financial statements. This combination of the practical use of financial statements and specific valuation techniques is one of the unique features of the book.

The book focuses particularly on auditor independence, and in this respect has become very timely as, in the post-Enron environment, independence has re-appeared on the SEC agenda. The authors have developed their book from existing research into auditor-client relationships and have built model of auditor/client relationships with the help of psychological theories. The model that emerges is true to life in that it addresses the relationship at the individual level, the firm level and the level of the wider society. It is well written and well worth reading by any one engaged in auditing research, standard setting and regulation.

The materials in these books come in two volumes covering introductory financial accounting study. The author has had considerable experience teaching the introductory accounting course - every misconception and difficult point that students have about the introductory course is explained in plain everyday terms including a detailed example that is developed through the books. It uses this case to discuss situations first then after the reader understands the context introduces the proper terminology. Whilst it primarily follows US GAAP, students learning other GAAPs will also be able to make full use of the material. This is also the perfect library purchase for all schools teaching accounting even where the intro class is not adopting the text.

The fourth edition of the book has two main aims. First,it incorporates certain major developments in the regulatory framework of accounting and accounting education. The new edition incorporates FRS 18, FRS 15 and the ASB Statement of Principles for Financial Reporting. The development in accounting education relates to the new ACCA syllabus. A new chapter on consolidated accounts has been included (to continue its full support of the ACCA syllabus).
The second main aim of this edition is to increase its user friendliness. This includes use of colour, a new structure, margin guidance to highlight the key terms and learning objectives and better page referencing of key terms.
Aimed at undergraduate/ MBA students worldwide taking a first course in financial accounting. Traditionally, local language texts have been used to teach this first course in financial accounting, as English language texts from the UK and US tend to focus exclusively on their respective standards and are generally too low level in their approach or place too much emphasis on bookkeeping. Over the past few years, the way in which this course has been taught has changed dramatically due to an increase in degree programmes being taught in the English language; a growing need for students to learn English accounting terms and expressions and increased dominance of International Accounting Standards in accounting practice throughout the world. Reflecting these changes this new text provides a complete introduction to financial accounting written in the accounting rules of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC).
I congratulate the authors for their foresight in producing such an excellent book' - Sir David Tweedie, Chairman IASB

Practical Accounting by Augustine Benedict and Barry Elliott (published by Pearson Education)
From our review of this text - 'Probably the best way to describe this book in a nutshell is that in many ways it is very similar to Frank Wood but with interactive questions. Both books are practical and easy to understand, but light on accounting theory and UK GAAP. This book may thus appeal to those either not attending a college course or studying at an institution with low contact hours (eg part-time). It would be ideal for introductory courses in accounting outside the UK and USA.'

Have you ever tried to analyse and compare the financial statements of foreign businesses in any detail? You'll get caught in a tangle of accounting regulations and practices that vary enormously from country to country across the developed world. In 1995 Palgrave provided the world's accountants with precisely the tools they needed to navigate this minefield by publishing Transnational Accounting. In December 2000 they published the 2nd edition of this work. Not only has the text been fully revised and updated but chapters on the accounting practices and regulations of five more countries have been added: Italy, Finland, Portugal, Norway and Argentina.
Financial Accounting is one in a series of texts in this series. Although published a few years ago it still remains fully relevant. They are also a 'must purchase' for all libraries where business subjects are taught as they provide excellent practice material for self-assessment.

Why Tax Systems Differ - A Comparative Study of the Political Economy of Taxation, by Cedric Sandford, ISBN 0 9515157 8 0
This book provides a precious contribution to the scarce literature on comparative taxation. The author describes the book as an analysis and comparison of taxation in different countries. Its aim is to look at what tax systems have in common, how they differ and to explain both the similarities and the differences.
That this book is in its seventh edition, having first been published in 1979, is testament to its usefulness and value. It provides an excellent summary of the UK's financial accounting system ideal for an international library. The particular strength of this book is that, in addition to traditional financial reporting items, it includes topics not always covered in standard financial reporting text books.

There can be no doubt that this is a successful book. It was first published in 1981 and has been very significantly developed over 19 years and 6 editions. It has the relatively unusual distinction of having created the subject and the courses which are likely to use it, and therefore to have created its own market. Direct rivals have now appeared, obviously a compliment to the pioneering work of Nobes and Parker.

Principles of VAT: A European Perspective by Adrian Ogley.
An initial review of the areas covered confirms that this is a very thorough book. The format and style of the book result in it being far more readable than the standard reference style texts such as Tolley’s VATwise, CCH British VAT guide and Butterworth’s DeVoil. It is well written and clearly thought out for the persistent reader. It is one of the very few VAT textbooks available anywhere in the world.
